Despite the heavy reporting in the news on Mexico's rougher areas, particularly where drug cartels operate, the plain fact is that Mexico is safer than it was 10 years ago.
According to a recent article online at San Luis Obispo Tribune violent crimes are down quite a bit from 2000 levels.
That fact, despite the drug cartel violence that we read and hear about, is a testament to the effectiveness of the changes in governance and policing in Mexico over the presidential terms of Calderon and Fox. Furthermore tourist cities like Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, and Playa Del Carmen are even further insulated from crime as the local population, police, and civic leaders understand the importance of tourism to their economy.
So bottom line... Mexico is safer now then in decades and tourist cities are even safer. Furthermore the slowed economy means there are some great villa rental deals out there. Let us know if we can help you find one.
